Here is one very lucky little dog. His
name is Duke and his future looked very bleak. We first met him at
the Amador shelter when they called and asked us for an
assessment. He has been showing some tendencies to resource
guard his possessions and would growl when some people approached.
We found that he really was just a little knucklehead that was not
properly socialized. He simply needed to learn proper manners and
how wells things workout if he behaves. Within an hour he was
showing his real friendly nature.
But his luck turned when he was adopted
out too early and found himself being returned back to the
shelter. The staff was told that he growled at a family member so
they returned him. At this point things did not look for this
little guy.
But Duke's guardian angel was watching
and his fortunes took a dramatic turn. The Second Chance
program was full, so a very kind person stepped up and purchased a
board and train package for little Duke. So out he came and is has
not taken him very long to win all our hearts.
So now he's here in
school and doing very well. He is about a year or two old and a
neutered male. Duke is probably a cross between a Dachshund and
Manchester Terrier. He has the long body characteristics of the
Dachshund with the head and tail of the Manchester. He also has
the terrier attitude but is mellowed and made very willing by the
Dachshund side. He is very healthy and current on all
vaccinations. He's also heartworm negative and on preventative. He
is very active and loves to play. He's had a German Shepherd puppy
for a roommate and had a great time.
He loves the training
process. It makes our day when we approach his kennel in the
morning and he is jumping up and down ready to go. So far, he
knows how to heel, walk on a loose lead, wait at doorways and sit
when you ask.
The most important part
of the training process is for Duke to trust a leader. The more he
finds how well things work when he works for us, the more proud
his happy prance gets.
How about a nice sit?
After a training
session nothing beats a little nap and some hugs. And that goes
for all of us!
And he even likes cats! Here Duke meets our residence lucky cat,
TC. No problems and at the end of our test
session, they wanted to play together. And that's a good thing
because TC is almost bigger that Duke!
