Update: November 23rd, 2008
Our big boy Black Bart has found the most perfect home.
Our Daughter and Son-in-law Krista and Jon came up for a visit and fell in love with our boy Bart, and I must say, the feeling was mutual.
I have the feeling Bart will be one spoiled dog and will get all the love and attention that he did not get as a puppy. Since Bart will be staying in the family, we can keep all of his Twin Cedar family up to date on how he does in his new home.
Bart will be living in San Jose but will be coming up for visits with the kids. We will definitely miss this big goofy boy.

Meet Black Bart
My name is Bart and here is my story:
I am an 18 month old male AKC registered black German Shepherd. From what Auntie Marge` has figured out, I was purchased from a breeder and then given as a gift to a family.
That family never did anything with me and I spent most of my young life as an outdoor dog tied up in the backyard. They did not want to bring me in the house because they never taught me not to potty in the house or not to jump on the children.
I also was never given any of my vaccines other than what my breeder had given me and I was not given monthly heartworm prevention. Marge` had heard from a person who knew my current owner's, that they wanted to "get rid of me". So even though I was not in a shelter, Marge` said if I passed her temperament test, she would bring me into her Second Chance Program. Well, lucky for me, I passed the test. She said I was a total wild child that had no manners what so ever and due to my large size...80 pounds, I would be a bit of a challenge to work with. First things first, two days after I was put in the program, I found myself at Blue Oak Vet in Jackson, getting my shots and a heartworm test. lucky for me that test came back negative. Since I was given a clean bill of health I stayed at the vet's to get neutered. I'm not to sure what that means but Marge` said I would be a much better dog if I had the procedure done.

I have now fully recovered from my surgery and have started my obedience training and socialization. Marge` say's I'm going through "puppydumb"
because I never had the chance to be a puppy when I was one. The problem is my size makes me very hard to manage but I'm trying very hard to be a good boy. The other problem I have is with other dog's. Since I never got out of my backyard I was never socialized with other dog's.
Marge` does not think I'm aggressive but I definitely do not know how to play properly. I'm way to rough with the other dog's and they do not know I'm just biting them playfully like a puppy would. Again the problem is my size and my very big teeth. Hopefully with training and time I will learn to be good with the other dog's.
*** A note from Marge` and the volunteer's that have been helping with Bart's training and socialization.***
Bart is coming along nicely with his training, he already know how to heel, auto sit, stay in a sit and is working on down and coming when called. We are still working on his behavior with the other dog's and he is doing much better. He is very mannerly when on lead but when he is running loose it is another story. We have lots of work to do before he will be available for adoption. |
