Hello, it's Bear again with an update on my training. It's been
about two weeks now and everything has been going great. I've
learned so much that Margaret thought it was time for something
new. I've been trying hard and although sometimes I get
distracted, I really want to learn and please. So one afternoon
there was a rumor that my Second Chance roommate, Bo, and I are
going to get to do something special. Well. we couldn't wait.
The next day came and they loaded us up into the car and off we
went. Now riding in the car is a treat, but when we arrived in
town imagine our surprise and delight when we got let out! How
great is that?! It turns out that we were going on what they call
a Field Trip. This is where the good
dogs that have completed basic training get to go downtown and
practice all the new skills they've learned. And today, that is me
and Bo!
Our first stop was outside the bank where we met some people on
their way in. We were on out best behavior and everyone loved us.
It was so much fun being petted by the people and hearing how good
we were. I'm so glad that I learned not to jump up or play bite.
Now I know how to get the attention... all I have to do is be
nice! It was great.
Here in the picture on the right, our buddy Virgil gets in on the
act. He likes the attention, too.
Crossing the street, with all the noise and distractions, we put
to use how we learned to heel and walk on a loose lead while
paying attention. All those left, right and about turns were
practice for this. We felt safe because we knew what to do and who
to trust and pay attention to.
We took a break in the shade. It was pretty hot, but we didn't
mind. Here we practice holding in a down position and with the
cool shade a rest was a welcome break. It was nice that people
came to see us and showed that we can get the same attention
without jumping all over and acting crazy. Who would have ever
guessed that?
Look at this, I even am good inside the store! Just imagine what
this place would have looked like if I had got in just two weeks
ago! They must trust me pretty well to take me in here. But that's
what the field trips are all about, what better way to prove what
we've learned. My new owner might not take me into any shops, but
it is nice to know that she could.
How better to finish the day than a nice drink from the fountain?
This was the best outing I've ever had. I hope I get to do it some
more. I can't wait until my new owner comes for me and I get to do
things like trips and walks with her. This is what life is all
about, being with people that love me. That's all I ever wanted.
Bo says that goes for him, too. And so would Virgil, but he's just
a big dumb greyhound so we have to speak for him. And he already
has his home, the lucky dog!
