August 31st, 2010 - Update

Our little Shar Pei mix Bear has really surprised us out here at the ranch. He is the last breed combination that you would think could become a Search & Rescue dog.

We started to notice that he had very high ball & tug drive about 4 weeks ago so we started to play hide & seek games with him. Well this little guy just blossomed right in front of our eyes.

He showed to us that he had what it would take to make a search dog. We contacted the National Search Dog Foundation to see if they would be interested in testing Bear but they were not because he had Shar Pei in him. (Not a breed that you see doing search work.)

We continued to work with Bear and introduced him to trailing and cadaver work. You guessed it, he excelled!! Amy, who has been instrumental in helping me get Vito trained for trailing and type 1 cadaver work decided to give Bear a try and was thoroughly impressed with his work.

She fostered Bear for a few days and then adopted him on the 31st. They will make one heck of a search team. Bear will have a buddy to play with and a large fenced yard to stay in while Amy is at work. Bear will be coming out daily to the ranch for training. Good luck Bear and we will see you tomorrow.

Bear Arrives at Twin Cedar

Bear hails from the Amador County Animal Control and Adoption Center.

He is an 8 month old Shar Pei/Lab cross (best guess). He is a very sweet and affectionate little guy who is a bundle of energy.

His kennel manners are horrible but once you get him out on lead he is brilliant.

He loves to practice his obedience lessons and spend time with his trainers. He gets along great with the other dogs, he is currently sharing a kennel with our other great boy Bandit. Bandit has been teaching Bear how to play soccer however, Bandit always wins.

Bear has been learning all about good kennel
manners, waiting for his food and at doorways,
sitting politely to get his training collar on, and
most of all….. No jumping on people and biting
at their pants and feet!!!!!!!

In the short time that Bear has been here he has learned most of his basic obedience commands such as: wait, heel, sit, down, stay and come.

He has even been working in the group classes and has done real well working with all of the distractions of the class environment.

If you would like to meet this goofy little guy, give us a call or send an e-mail to set up an appointment.
